The Falcon and the Winter Soldier (Series Retrospect)

It's not news that some people were dissatisfied with the way WandaVision  ended, thinking that it conformed too much to the typical MCU norm. Well, that's not really a problem you're going to have with The Falcon and the Winter Soldier  because the MCU's second Disney+ series has firmly cemented itself as one of the best products to come out of this juggernaut of a cinematic universe. After exploring the magical shenanigans in their previous series, Marvel Studios not only buckled down on the more "human" problems that arose after the events of Avengers: Endgame  but also tackled very real issues that many groups of people experience in real life. Without further ado, let's dive right into our series retrospect.  SERIES RETROSPECT AND REVIEW (SPOILER ALERT) Introduction : After elevating us to a cosmic or mystic level in their past few films/series, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier  brings the MCU back down to Earth by focusing on our titular characters ...

Mortal Kombat (Review)

In the past few decades we've gotten great comic book films, films based on book series and even TV series spin-offs so you would think that video game films are next in line. Unfortunately, more often than not video game films are usually quite bad, with filmmakers unable to properly capture the lore behind the games. One such attempt was with the 1990s  Mortal Kombat  duology based on the video game series of the same name. However after the critical and commercial failure of second film Mortal Kombat: Annihilation , the franchise was stuck in development hell for almost 20 years, although games continued to be released. Now, after 24 years, 2021's Mortal Kombat  has finally been released in theatres, retelling the age-old story of an inter-realm fighting tournament but this time with a new original character at the forefront. With promising trailers and lots of expectations riding on this product, how well does New Line Cinema's reboot hold up under scrutiny? Let's d...

Beyond Evil (Initial Thoughts)

In my previous initial thoughts post I mentioned that thriller dramas are something I'm trying to shy away from nowadays because of their intensity but I've already been drawn back in by a series I've been sitting on. A psychological thriller with murder mystery elements woven in,  Beyond Evil  (or directly translated to Monster ) revolves around two policemen who will do anything, including breaking the law, to catch a serial killer. Along the way, they must delve into their own pasts and uncover secrets about those involved in the case, questioning not just everyone else's innocence but also each other's. Starring Shin Ha-kyun  ( Pied Piper ,  Soul Mechanic ) and Yeo Jin-goo  ( The Crowned Clown ,  Hotel Del Luna ) as male leads LEE DONG-SIK and HAN JOO-WON, this series has been fairly well-received all around, even receiving the second most nominations at the 57th Baeksang Arts Awards. Without further ado, let's dive into this crazy series.  INITIAL...

Hello, Me! (Series Retrospect)

I went into Hello, Me!  wanting a fairly simple romcom, enough to give me a few laughs and lots of cute scenes. Instead, I got so much more, with a drama that gave me a better understanding of what it means to move past and let go of any past guilt so that we can live life to the fullest. There were many heartwarming moments throughout the series and it's definitely one of the more unique products to hit the scene now. Let's dive in.  SERIES RETROSPECT AND REVIEW (SPOILER ALERT) The main plotline in the drama revolves around Bahn Ha-ni, a 37-year-old single woman who lives an aimless life without hopes or dreams. Her current hopeless and lousy existence is a far cry from her 17-year-old self, a self-assured and bright girl who was popular among her high school and the apple of everyone's eye. When her past self miraculously ends up 20 years in the future to meet her present day self, Ha-ni must go through a journey of self-discovery and reflect on her past trauma, all for h...

Hello, Me! (Initial Thoughts)

I've been watching some pretty intense dramas of late, lots of thriller and science fiction. That kind of stuff gets a little tiring to watch sometimes, which is why I'm very happy to be able to start another romcom. Not just any romcom though, we're going into the realm of fantasy with Hello, Me!  (or literally translated as Hello? It's Me! ). Based on the 2011 novel Fantastical Girl  by Kim Hye-jung, this drama tells the story of a 37-year-old woman drifting through her life with no dreams or goals who miraculously meets her 17-year-old self and together, she undergoes a journey of self-healing. Starring Choi Kang-hee ( Queen of Mystery ,  Good Casting ) as female lead BAHN HA-NI and  Kim Young-kwang  ( The Guardians ,  The Secret Life of My Secretary ) as male lead HAN YOO-HYUN, this drama is be a very nice and more relaxing change from the previous few series I've caught. Let's dive in.  INITIAL THOUGHTS AND COMMENTS (SPOILER ALERT) Episode 1 opens...

Sisyphus: The Myth (Series Retrospect)

When a drama is marketed as some big anniversary-celebrating event, you expect it to be some grandiose display of awesome action, excellent writing and characters you care about. This is why I'm honestly quite disappointed with the way that Sisyphus: The Myth  panned out. Despite using a potentially super interesting concept of time travel as its basis for events, the drama descends into madness-inducing time paradox mumbo jumbo that only seeks to confuse viewers and lead us down a self-destructive path as the drama seeks to clear up misunderstandings but only makes things worse. Let's dive in.  SERIES RETROSPECT AND REVIEW (SPOILER ALERT) The main plotline in the drama revolves around Kang Seo-hae, a young woman from the future who time travels to the present day (2020) in order to prevent a nuclear war from decimating South Korea. In order to do this, she needs to prevent Han Tae-sul, the genius engineer CEO of Quantum & Time, from creating a quantum teleportation machin...
