Tale of the Nine Tailed (Series Retrospect)

Tale of the Nine Tailed  was a good reminder of why I loved fantasy dramas completely or primarily set in the present day. The mystical elements and effects that leave viewers in awe, coupled with a modern setting that doesn't bore me make it a recipe for success. I've never been a fan of period dramas so having the story unfold in the modern world with some flashbacks to ancient times is as close as I'll get to watching a period drama without boring me to tears. Anyway, this drama was many things, mostly exciting with a dash of humour thrown in but let me tell you, nothing will prepare you for how absolutely devastating some of the events in the last episode will be. Let's dive in.  SERIES RETROSPECT AND REVIEW (SPOILER ALERT) The foremost thought on viewers' minds when they see this drama will probably be how similar it is to Guardian: The Lonely and Great God . An ancient immortal deity with amazing superpowers has spent centuries alive, waiting for their destine...

Tale of the Nine Tailed (Initial Thoughts)

I added  Tale of the Nine Tailed  to my watchlist fairly long ago, back when it was in the pre-production stage. With worldwide production halts due to COVID-19, I fully expected this series to not even be released this year but to my utter surprise, it dropped in October and finished airing early this month. Starring  Jo Bo-ah  ( My Strange Hero ,  Forest ) as female lead NAM JI-AH and  Lee Dong-wook  ( Guardian: The Lonely and Great God ,  Touch Your Heart ) as male lead LEE YEON, this fantasy romance drama is sure to intrigue audiences and honestly, it's been a while since I've dabbled in dramas of this genre. Let's dive in. INITIAL THOUGHTS AND COMMENTS (SPOILER ALERT) Most people will remember Lee Dong-wook as the beloved Grim Reaper from  Guardian: The Lonely and Great God  and this drama marks his return to the small screen as another supernatural being whose fate is tied to that of a normal woman, with their connection dating bac...

Do Do Sol Sol La La Sol (Series Retrospect)

I spent the better part of  Do Do Sol Sol La La Sol  enjoying the comedic elements as well as the engaging plot. Having such an optimistic female lead, to the point of naivety, was also very refreshing and made the drama all the more fun to watch. So, it's a huge disappointment for me to say that this drama really dropped the ball in the last two episodes. Let's dive in. SERIES RETROSPECT AND REVIEW (SPOILER ALERT) I absolutely love how this drama doesn't take itself too seriously, especially with the almost excessive effects added in post-production. Little touches like giving speech bubbles to Ra-ra's dog Mimi, literally having words appear in thin air or even creating a spoof poster of the Oscar-winning Parasite  (this last one really made me burst into laughter) gave the drama a lot of personality and really drew me in. I laughed a lot seeing these additions and truly, the silliness of this drama makes it very unique and really captures the viewers' attention. W...

Wonder Woman 1984 (Review)

3 years after the success of 2017's Wonder Woman , our Amazon warrior princess returns to the big screen with Gal Gadot reprising her role as the titular heroine in Wonder Woman 1984 . With the film taking place 66 years after the events of its prequel, Wonder Woman faces new threats caused by an ancient artifact that grants people wishes, albeit with a sick twist in the process. As she journeys through the film, she gains even more understanding on what it means to be a hero and the sacrifices one has to make in the process. Let's dive in.  REVIEW (SPOILER ALERT) Introduction : While the first film followed Diana's first venture into man's world back in World War I, the sequel instead focuses on her continuing heroic adventures while grieving for her deceased lover Steve Trevor (played by Chris Pine). By this point, she's a veteran superheroine, saving people from danger and stopping crimes, all while trying to keep her secret identity. While the scale of her activ...

Do Do Sol Sol La La Sol (Initial Thoughts)

Having had its release delayed by slightly over a month due to COVID-19,  Do Do Sol Sol La La Sol is another Netflix Original K-drama that has finally graced our screens. Marking the return of well-loved actress Go Ara  ( Reply 1994 ,  Black ) as female lead GOO RA-RA as well as the first time that  Lee Jae-wook  ( Search: WWW ,  Extraordinary You ) is cast as the male lead in SUNWOO JOON, this romcom revolves around a young pianist who loses everything but her optimistic outlook on life in one day, with her moving away to start her life anew in a calm seaside town and a part-time job worker who hides a mysterious background behind his cold, handsome exterior. With these two names headlining the drama, it's without a doubt that this was definitely on lots of people's radars. While we have yet to fully grasp the direction this drama is going, episode 1 has successfully grabbed my attention and makes me want to continue watching. Let's dive in.  INI...

Start-Up (Series Retrospect)

Considering how long each episode of  Start-Up  was, I think I finished it pretty quickly. Going into this drama, I was worried that it would be too heavily focused on coding or even the business aspect of things but I'm very glad to see that this drama was so much more than that. At its core, this drama was about how we're not limited by the choices we make in our lives or even the situations we're presented with but instead, we forge our own paths through whatever hurdles life throws at us and I think the characters we see on the small screen embody that very well.  SERIES RETROSPECT AND REVIEW (SPOILER ALERT) The biggest thing to come out of this drama is probably the insane boom in Kim Seon-ho's popularity. Despite having had lead roles in previous dramas as well as being in variety shows, his role as Start-Up 's second male lead Ji-pyeong has undoubtedly shot him to even bigger stardom. Many people sympathised with his character's love problems, with him st...

True Beauty (Initial Thoughts)

Those who know me know that I refuse to watch two dramas concurrently because I fear it'll mess with my limited brain capacity but I have waited forever for True Beauty to finally grace the small screen. Having followed the massively popular webtoon by Yaongyi for almost a year now, I anticipated its release as a drama, especially since it had been in the works for so long. I was very happy when  Moon Ga-young  ( Tempted ,  Find Me in Your Memory ) and ASTRO's  Cha E un-woo  ( Gangnam Beauty ,  Rookie Historian Goo Hae-ryung ) were confirmed as female lead IM JU-KYUNG and male lead LEE SU-HO respectively because it meant another step closer to seeing the webtoon I enjoyed reading every week come to life. That said, does the first episode live up to the hype that many fans of the webtoon (including myself) have generated? Let's find out.  INITIAL THOUGHTS AND COMMENTS (SPOILER ALERT) Many people probably noticed this when the first teasers/trailers came...
